I can actually kind of explain this but its a tough pill to swallow, see when you work for a company effectively they are buying your time at a rate set by your employment contract. When you show up late they already committed to buying your time which you have now not delivered they then have to adjust your pay to reflect that which means they pay twice once for the time lost and once to pay someone (typically more than you) to adjust your payslip so they lose out twice maybe three times if they have to pay someone extra to stay on until you arrive. If it is at the end of the day however yes they still have to pay to have your payslip adjusted but that was their decision to buy more of your time than initially agreed so they have gained your time and lost having your pay adjusted so they only "lose" once and I say lose like that because your time makes them more money than they pay you so in reality it pays for itself.
